Hand-drawn advertisement for a lithographer
In a world of digital marketing where ads are designed on computers and placed online, it's easy to forget the beauty and artistry with which advertising was done in the past. That's why The AVLT & Wiborg Company's recent reprint of a 19th-century advertising poster is a very special find.
The poster, originally created in the late 19th century, features a stunning lithographic drawing of a woman with her hair up in a bun and holding a bouquet of flowers. The colors of the poster are bold and striking, with a bright green background and eye-catching red accents. The artwork was made entirely by hand using the lithographic printing process.
Invented in the late 18th century, lithography is a printing process that uses a flat plate of stone or metal to transfer an image onto paper or other materials. In this process, an image is drawn onto the stone or slab with a greasy substance, which then absorbs paint when the slab is wet. The ink is then transferred to the paper or other material, creating a high quality image with incredible detail and texture.
The AVLT & Wiborg Company, which originally made the poster, was an ink manufacturer based in Cincinnati, Ohio. The company was founded in 1867 by German immigrants Adolf Vollratz, Louis Tauscher and Emil Wiborg. The AVLT & Wiborg Company quickly became one of the leading ink manufacturers in the United States, producing high quality lithographic, letterpress and gravure inks.
The company's success is due in large part to its commitment to quality and innovation. In the early 1900s, the AVLT & Wiborg Company introduced a new range of inks specifically designed for use in color printing. This was a major breakthrough at the time, as previous color inks were unreliable and difficult to process. The new inks were so successful that they quickly became the industry standard, and AVLT & Wiborg Company continued to innovate and push the boundaries of printing technology.
The AVLT & Wiborg Company advertising poster reprint is not only a beautiful work of art, but also a fascinating insight into the history of printing and advertising. It reminds us of the incredible artistry and creativity that went into advertising in the past and the importance of preserving and celebrating that history. As we continue to advance in digital marketing, let's not forget the rich and vibrant history of advertising that has come before us.
